You couldn’t name this show any better. “Lively” is exactly what Cal Wilson is. She’s a bubbly, smiley, happy person that has an infectious energy that you can’t help but get caught up in. Cal delivers a cracking show for her first Solo Stand-up effort in over two years.

Cal has been out of the stand-up game to give birth to her first child Digby and this experience has given her an abundance of material to base a show on and she delivers these in spades. A good portion of the show is given over to child rearing and pregnancy which surprisingly enough for me, didn’t go over the top and get boring. Cal anticipated this could be the case and introduced the “Vagina Bell” which you were free to ring if the stories were going to places that squeamish people didn’t want them to go. This added another angle to the show when it was given to James to control where the jokes were heading.
It was fantastic to see Cal back on stage. She has a great natural presence and such a personality that you just feel happy. The show isn’t offensive and doesn’t try to be anything but a good hour of quality story telling. She does talk at a million miles an hour and sometimes you can see that her brain has trouble keeping up with her mouth which often supplied the golden moments.
For a Kiwi, she’s embedded herself into the Australian Comedy scene and will be around for a long while to come. I highly recommend getting down to the Fringe Hub Ballroom and catching this rare comic talent in her long awaited return to the stage.
