This was a late-night show in the wee room at the Gilded Balloon and there was only a small audience for the show, but H (should it be H or Anthony or Mr Hildebrand? I’ll stick with H) soldiered on. There was a small mixing desk on stage (now there’s a trend for this year as this is the fourth show I’ve seen a personal sound desk on stage) and a flip chart for a later slide show.
H told a story about his friend’s search for a dictator while interweaving poetry, jokes and puns along the way. I must admit I didn’t think the main story was strong enough to carry the rest of the show along, although the puns were bad enough to delight any pun-meister’s heart. He was a good storyteller though and the jokes were funny but I just felt he was let down by trying to be too surreal in his main thread. The poetry I can make little comment on as I’ve never really been a lover of poems, especially when they don’t rhyme and seem more like short stories. Could be just me though.
If you enjoy a good (bad) pun or a few late night laughs this is a good show to consider, but there are some quiet patches at the moment which need to be ‘humourised’.
