At times Python-esque sketches, at others straight stand-up, Happy By Request is a delightful blend of comedy styles that is all Xavier Michelides. Hitting the stage wielding a trumpet and tap-dancing, the audience is instantly prepared for the whimsically absurd world of Xavier’s mind.
Watching Xavier on stage, it’s hard not to be taken in by his enthusiasm for performing. Xavier revels in dancing off track into meta-arguments with himself about the absurdity of his humour. While a lesser performer, this may fall into self-indulgence, Xavier is constantly aware of his audience and never crosses that line.
Xavier’s talent with characters is astounding, and he slips in and out of voices with practiced ease. Even arguing with himself, the characters on stage are always distinct and it’s almost impossible not to have the complete scenery of every sketch with only a few voices and mimes.
The quality of this show, combined with his fantastic Post Apocalyptic Users’ Guide last year show that Xavier has truly hit his stride as a performer. Xavier has become one of my favourite performers, and I’m sure if you give him a go, he’ll be one of yours too.
