Troy Kinne kicked of his show Troy Kinne is The 3rd Best Comedian in his Family, with about ten minutes of general stand up which, whilst inoffensive, did little to activate my comedy neurons. However, once he finished with this preliminary banter and started the show proper, KABLOOHEY!

A lot of comedians use video inserts to inform/embellish/distract from their shows, but I’ve never seen video used with this efficacy and sheer hilarity. The show proper kicks off with a fantastically funny video sequence starring Troy’s Mum and Dad and directed by Troy. This is a terrific way to introduce the main subjects of the show, Mr & Mrs Kinne.

Between video sequence Troy tells the audience about his parents and about what makes them the king and queen of comedy. The reality is of course that it’s Troy who is the greatest comedian in the family. He is the one who is able to look at the minutia and at the broader picture, take those things and translate them into readily accessible comedy. A skill which is more difficult than I just made it sound.

Troy brings a great physicality to this show; his mime skills coming to the fore. His impersonation of his mum attempting to suppress a yawn is not to be missed.

The only pity is the time spent warming up the audience with his pretty ordinary preliminary stand up. I can’t help but feel that if he’d tapped this, obviously rich, vein of comedy for that little bit longer this show could have been a triumph. As it is, it’s really, really good, often bottom clenchingly funny.
