Ahh, good old honest stand up. Micky tells us about his youthful rebellious times living on a council estate in the East end of London when the Sex Pistols were around, and asks how he has gradually sunk into the throes of middle class suburban respectability. Did he lose something by conforming to the standards of society or is it an inevitable direction we all take? But it’s not a lecture. He gives us the tales of the insane little things he does and tries to explain the tribal customs that exist in surburbia, while also trying to explain why you need just the right number of buttons done up on your shirt and that singlets suddenly become very comfortable at a certain age. Heaps of jokes and puns and a lot of embarrassing stories about Micky’s life (maybe just a little too much about his sex life with his wife).
Micky is a very cheerful and relaxed performer who is happy to delve into the innermost tribal workings of inner suburbia. His stories are entertaining and embarrassing in equal measure and his rapport with the audience at times bordered on the uncanny. There were a few moments when it appeared he could read our minds, though I don’t recall ever having used the phrase through-draught and I didn’t even notice how many buttons he had done up. Come and see the show and confess to how much of your own rebellion has just melted away.
