Back for 2011, 7pm every Sunday on SYN 90.7FM (Melbourne)

I picked up this ticket almost by accident, and knew nothing about the performer apart from what was on the flyer. I don’t see how Robin Williams could compare her to Lenny Bruce as I saw her in more of a Latin Joan Rivers vein.

She started off the show slowly by introducing herself and teling us a bit about her life (Lesbian, shared house with gay man, living in San Francisco, last in Edinburgh in 1994, loved Amsterdam etc) and some funny stories about the different dating techniques that gay men and gay women have. The show really took off when she started playing characters and I think that this is an area that she should concentrate on as they were excellent. The first character was her aunt and how she was treated as a child, with a little lesson in the complexities of Spanish thrown in. The last was the character who co-starred with her in the movie Sphere (well they were both bit-parts that suffered horrible fates so the lead characters could live). Awesome death scene with some of the most corny dialogue that almost makes me want to watch the film.

Other slices of her life include the screen test with Kathleen Turner, a visit to some sort of weird bondage gay club, and the dangers of taking drugs (or more correctly the dangers of using them as an excuse for your life, stopping the drugs and realising it was you all along). This show will only get better and more crowded as the festival progresses, and I recommend you see it for some of the funniest character acting going.
