After a recent alteration in the line up of directors at Misfits of Comedy, Annette Slattery Chats with Co-presenter Karl Woodberry about the progress of the room.
How would you describe Misfits of Comedy?
Fun. Misfits is the kind of room I would want to go to. Its very relaxed and Cruisy. Comics are allowed to do pretty much what ever they want and with full PA, Projection screen and lighting set up the creative possibilities are vast. I just called Eric Hutton, who is a regular at Misfits, to ask what he thought was good about the room but I got his message bank, so I called Xavier Michelides instead who said he likes the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that it has a real audience of randoms and locals who just want a good old fashion chuckle.

You’ve recently had an alteration in the line up of directors (Dan Brader has left and subsequently started a room at the same time and night, across the road from Misfits). Has this changed the direction of the room?
I think the room was on its own course anyway and this was why changes were made. Me and my partner in crime Damien Briese work closely with Cam the owner of Blue Tile Lounge in promoting the shit out of the night and we are all pumped on how it is going. Damien and we work really well together and have even started doing a duo act called Line Steppers which has been really fun.
Your next week’s line up includes Lawrence Mooney, Oliver Clark and Alison Bice. What kind of mix of comedians are you trying to bring to the room?
All three of these comics have been on before and killed. It’s not really about a conscious mix, it’s just what comics we think are piss funny and who’s right for the room.
Next Wednesday will mark your twelfth show. How have you found the experience? How have audiences responded to the room?
This has been one of the funnest things Ive ever done. It’s been great meeting comics, working on my act and expanding my creative flow and constucting something I believe in. The audience have been great, even the Smith Street Crackheads seem to be having a good time.
The Misfits of Comedy happens each Wednesday @ the Blue Tile Lounge, 95 Smith Street Fitzroy. Wednesday 6th May features Lawrence Mooney, Oliver Clark, Alison Bice and More, MC Karl Woodberry, Music By TANG, Tim Mcmillan & the Smith Street Circus, FREE.
