One of the major events on the Melbourne literary calendar, the five year old Emerging Writers’ Festival is back for 2009. Running from Thursday 23rd April until Sunday 31st May, the Festival not only provides workshops, an Ambassadors Program, speeches and panels catering for writers from all walks of life, but this year is featuring events of interest to comedy writers.

The Serious Business of Being Funny will provide a fun and informative way to explore the pleasures and pains of comedy writing. Hosted by Xavier Michelides and featuring a panel comprised of Claire Hooper, Sammy J and Josh Earl, it will provide an insight into the realities of stand up and television work, and will enable you to see some of Melbourne’s funniest people in action. This session happens at The Empress Hotel (714 Nicholson St, Fitzroy North) on Wednesday 27th of May at 8pm.
As part of the From Here to There sessions that are intensive looks writer’s projects, Sammy J will discuss his Comedy Festival show 1999 at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday 31st May at 12.30pm. Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope will present a session on their ABC TV series The Librarians at MTH on Saturday 30th May at 1.30pm.
The festival includes sessions on TV Script Writing (Framing the action – Television Writing at MTH on Saturday 30th May at 11am), online publishing (The revolution will be downloaded at MTH on Saturday 30th May at 3pm) and many more.
