Erin Davidson, the brains trust behind last year’s successful Unspeakable, has brought it back for 2009 – only this year it’s twice as good. This season we are treated to two shows: one at Gasworks and the upcoming Frankston show on Monday 20 April.

Even while waiting in the foyer you know you are not at a typical comedy festival gig. Why is it so quiet? Well, this is a show that caters for the deaf community – but not exclusively. Nic Maher acts as the interpreter when required and the acts are chosen for their appeal to all audiences. Adam Hills has returned as host and smoothly links the night’s guests together with some very subject specific material that goes down perfectly with the audience.
The three acts appearing have been carefully chosen; each performing a set without words. The Birdmann is the first cab off the rank and doesn’t disappoint with his plastic bag juggling, escape act and the crowd pleasing – tea-time through the nose (don’t ask, just go see him).
Rob Roy, a deaf performance artist, performs some interesting visual theatre. His World of Sports skit was reminiscent of the Umbilical Brothers but without the sound effects.
But the star attraction is Sam Wills as The Boy With Tape On His Face. He was a festival favourite last year and Groggy Squirrel Readers’ Choice recipient and his popularity is far from waning. For those of you unfamiliar with his work, he uses well-chosen music, audience participation and clever props to set up his unique and hilarious brand of theatre.
Unspeakable is a wonderful showcase of some fine talents, with really broad appeal and is a great way to see a range of acts at a very reasonable price. It’s also suitable for families (it’s still school holidays) and obviously language is no problem. The Frankston show has the charming Damian Callinan as MC with The Birdmann, Rob Roy and Sam Wills all returning.
