If nobody has yet observed that Tripod are a Melbourne institution, it’s probably high time. When Scod (Scott Edgar), Yon (Simon Hall) and Gatesy (Steven Gates) confessed at the start of Idio Clips that they’d been a bit lazy this year by not putting on a ‘real’ show, no-one in the audience seemed to mind one bit. And with good reason- the breezycamaraderie between these three musicians is so pleasant to witness that it’s hard not to want to be a part of it in some small way. Which is really the idea behind Idio Clips, an annual event that has been running since 2007 which involves the band playing along to fan-submitted videos projected behind them on a big screen.
As you’d expect, the videos themselves run the gamut from dire to incredibly awesome, but it was nice that after each clip the band would address the creator in the audience and have a little chat to them about what they’d made, which kept the event feeling very communal. All in all it was a huge success, and a lot of happy faces filed out of the Comedy Theatre. be sure to catch the show when it return next year, it’s well worth it.
