“Randy’s Postcards From Purgatory” is a show unlike any other at the comedy festival. Not only is the entire show performed by a puppet, it is also one of the most masterful pieces of comedic theater that I’ve had the fortune to experience.

The show explores the life of the self-loathing puppet Randy as it falls apart, tracing his failing relationship and career. “Postcards From Purgatory” maps out his story from the university through various jobs, affairs, breakdowns and his eventual employment as a children’s performer.
It’s long been apparent that Heath McIvor is an immensely talented puppeteer. His long-time collaboration with Sammy J over late-night shows at the Butterfly Club culminated in their work together at last years festival on the “Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams”. As brilliant as that performance was, this years show equals, if not surpasses that achievement and demonstrates that Heath truly has the skills to stand on his own.
The theatrical possibilities that arise from using a puppet are well realised by Heath’s well-honed instincts. So many little touches go into making Randy really come alive. It’s not just the brilliance of the puppetry that carries the show through though – the writing is sheer genius. Randy’s ranting monologues are filled with acerbic wit and angry comedy. On top of this are built some of the most hilarious sequences you’re likely to see this festival – of particular note, the Private Investigator sequence and the Yeti.
This is one of the true must-see shows of the festival.
