In Mother of the Year Nelly Thomas, Catherine Deveny and Christine Basil take us on a maternal roadtrip of mothering through the stages. The premise is that all three are battling it out for Mother of the Year and we get to hear their war stories and vote for a winner.

Thomas’s daughter is 20 months old and Nelly’s got the wardrobe to prove it. Thomas works through her routine effortlessly. Her material is solid and on topic and sure it’s funny, but Thomas doesn’t take any risks. However, she redeems herself with a cracking re-enactment of her birth experience. Serial pest and Age columnist Catherine Deveny shakes it up by doing what she does best – saying what most of us are afraid to say. Her material on visits to the chemist and a recent holiday in Nagambie is pure gold.

But the big question is – Christine Basil – where have you been? Basil has the dry suburban mum delivery (not unlike Denise Scott) that really engages the audience. She weaves in stories about her adult kids with stories about her own mother into a set of endearing, biting and laugh-out-loud material.

And as a special bonus radio veteran Peter Grace has been enlisted to give the ladies the heavyweight introductions they each deserve. Surprisingly this mummy-themed show attracted a very broad crowd: everyone from Gen Y to grandfathers was represented in the audience – and appeared to enjoy it equally.

Don’t be put off by the title, you don’t have to be a mum to enjoy this show. This is a cracker of a show, which had the audience onside and laughing in recognition throughout.
