Only the brave are tackling politics these days in comedy – but thank God Mathew Kenneally is one of them. In Mathew Kenneally on the Post Hope Express we are treated to a solid hour of tight, topical and quite frankly, hilarious comedy.

Kenneally’s material was right in the pocket; tackling everything from customer service to climate change. Sure he has a go at some easy targets: Telstra employees, Sarah Palin and home schooled kids. But he also knows the love-in with Kevin Rudd is over and he’s not afraid to have a crack at Mr Popular and start ruffling a few feathers. Kenneally’s commentary on the government’s climate change policy and his savvy membership-boosting ideas for the Greens are particular highlights.
This is not just another hour of amusing free-form stand-up. Kenneally manages to weave his characters and themes back throughout the show so there are no loose-endings. The show is tight but Kenneally manages to make it look so effortless – we get all the laughs without having to see any of the work. Even though Kenneally used to practice as a lawyer he still manages to cut through the weasel words and tell it like it is.
Kenneally really knows his audience – he’s confident that if they’ve bought a ticket for his Post Hope Express that they’re playing for Team Kenneally. There was a full house for opening night and Kenneally really killed from the get-go. A flat battery in a hearing aid is the only excuse for not laughing out loud at this show.
The show poster for this show pays homage to Barack Obama’s popular blue-toned Hope poster – except in Kenneally’s case he’s labelled himself Hopeless. Don’t believe it! Matt Kenneally is one of the freshest, funniest and most authentic voices working the circuit. Buy a ticket, take a friend and you won’t be disappointed.
