If you’re after a jam-packed show full of energy, great character studies and non-stop chat – you’re going to really love Felicity Ward’s Ugly as a Child Variety Show. I don’t know if Felicity Ward always operates at maximum speed or if she just overdosed on the red cordial but this woman hardly draws breath for the full hour.
Ward pokes fun at her family, her upbringing but mostly at herself in this cracking fast-paced show. Her character comedy is really brilliant, in particular her impersonation of the high school counsellor. And channelling Ruth Cracknell – pure genius.
When communicating with the audience Ward really shines. She’s quick but every barb is cushioned in affection, making her all the more likeable. Ward invites interaction from the audience – don’t be scared, it works well – and when these interjections occur she does not miss a beat, dealing with the interjection and then moving seamlessly back into her show.
Ward deservedly won the best newcomer at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and there are sure to be more awards coming her way. Felicity Ward’s a wonderful talent but I think this might be just the tip of the iceberg, I can’t wait to see what she does next.
