If you’ve got some tiny fringe goers along with you in Adelaide, there are a few shows that you can take them a long to and this is one being put on in the afternoon at The Rhino room. Aimed squarely at the under fives, it should keep them amused for an hour. I must admit to being a bit less amused. From the title of the show, I guess I was just expecting more fairies. You know the whole fairlyland thing with toadstools and fairy rings and fairly dust sparkles etc There were little girls sitting expectantly ‘in their fairy outfits that may have felt the same way. But the theme of this show was more about flying. The house music chosen to play while we all waited for the show was lovely and included fabulous flying songs such as ‘Some day I’ll fly away’, the theme from the Greatest American Hero and finally the fanfare of John Williams Superman Theme. If only the show could have lived up to this grand introduction.

I did find it perversely amusing that the show was encouraging under fives to have a go at flying and other potentially maiming things such as lassoing. There is a warning in the programme “Always use gravity responsibly”, but I feel there should have been a bigger warning: this show contains clowns. Proper scary be-wigged, red-nosed, made up clowns. These were the hosts Frehd and Tim, who were quite good at magic tricks and singling catchy songs and blowing awesome bubbles, but they were not fairies. Apparently what they were most keen on was finding out how to fly. Frehd decided to give it a go, but just as she was just about to jump off a box, the stage manager appeared to stop her for occupational health & safety reasons. So they decided the best way, to find out how to fly would be to ask a fairy. Eventually after lots of songs and stories, a little girl fairy popped out of a box, but she’s too young to fly, so had her fairy mum whisper the secret of flying. The fairy mum was frightened of heights and couldn’t fly either. Frehd sort of pretended to fly, but it was a bit of a n anti climax. So the show didn’t really fulfil it’s promise any actually flying. There were a couple of fairies and the show held the kids attention, they joined in when asked to, but the show just lacked a bit of magic fairy dust for me.
