After trimphant runs on Broadway and London’s West End, the 2004 Tony Award Best Musical winner Avenue Q will be touring Austalia in 2009.

Described as Sesame Street meets South Park the action takes place on Avenue Q, New York, about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get. Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery.
You may have heard Dave Callan play the song “The internet’s for Porn” on his Triple J radio show and this gives you an idea as to what to expect from this musical that features puppets. They may be puppets but with musical numbers like “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” and “If You Were Gay,” this send-up of political correctness isn’t for the kiddies.
The Australian season will feature a local cast who will be trained in puppetry by Melbourne’s own Polyglot Puppet Theatre.
Avenue Q kicks off in Melbourne on 4 June 2009 at the Comedy Theatre (240 Exhibition St, Melbourne) The show then moves on to Sydney from August 2009, Canberra from October 2009, Perth from November 2009, Adelaide from December 2010 and Brisbane from February 2010 before heading to New Zealand.
Tickets for the Melbourne season are on sale now through Ticketek. Visit the Avenue Q website for more information.
