Nicky Talacko is having a party and wants you to come. After her cracking show I saw at this years Melbourne Comedy Festival Cinder-Effin-Rella, At Fringe Nicky is exploring facing ones fears, particularly those surrounding putting on a party, which are probably quite similar to those of putting on a festival show. Do they like me? Will it be a success? Will people snoop in my bathroom cabinet? Will they turn up? Well one way of encouraging people to turn up is to make it free, which Nicky has done. Then you give them party favours and plates of party nibblies and a warm welcome.

Nicky is a bubbly party host giving us the tour – she’s set up an all important kitchen at the side of the stage – and regaling us with tales of life as a soapie star in the UK and more poignantly dealing with her insecurities. She tells us of her fear of spiders, planes, posh restaurants, being single over 30 and singing. But importantly, she has funny tales to tell about how she has faced and dealt with all of these things. She also displays her talent for physical comedy when demonstrating her relationship with her unwearable skinny jeans. Other highlights in the show involved her wonderful and impressive ability to take on comic characters and accents.
I must confess to being a bit of a fan of Nicky’s work. I’ve seen her do stand up and was most impressed with Cinder Effin Rella. She’s such an engaging story teller, eliciting laughs from instantly relatable circumstances and she puts on a damn fine show. I did feel she might have held back on some of her acting stories, good though they are, but for another show and might have had a few stronger party anecdotes. She didn’t really delve into how dire parties can be, but then this was a party and the mood was pretty cheery which is fair enough. She had a joyful finale that I won’t give away, but hey it’s entertaining, free and there’s nibblies and party favours, why aren’t you rushing out to the Vault now?
