2008 Melbourne Comedy Festival Reviews

Wil Hodgson – Straight Outta Chippenham

Wil Hodgson is a man who defies easy categorisation. His intimating build and tattooed arms may give a tough guy impression at a distance, but on closer inspection the bright pink hair is accompanied by matching nail polish and the amongst the tattoos lies the image of Miss Piggy. This combination of hard and girly makes for an endlessly fascinating personality.

Strung together with the details of obtaining and maintaining items for his My Little Pony collection, Wil weaves stories about living in the tough streets of the southern English town of Chippenham. Exploring what it takes to survive as a sensitive man in a town that seems to be obsessed with the rougher side of masculinity, Wil tells of his upbringing and explores what exactly it means to be a hard man.

Wil has an almost hypnotic manner of speaking and his accent and high speed delivery can occasionally leave your mind wandering, but he’s always got another tale to call back your attention. His passion for large women, punk and pop music and the misappropriation of patriotism for racism will have audiences hanging on his every word.

Wil is a unique performer filled with passion and a singular world view. It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to watch him in action.
