Greatness Thrust Upon Them

Greatness Thrust Upon Them is an hour-long theatrical production written and directed by Lorin Clarke and produced by Rita Walsh (Golden Gibbo nominees for We Are Young and Free) that tells the story of what happens behind the scenes at the United Nations environment summit.

Megan (Julia Harari) and her boss Sam (Miriam Glaser) are in charge of operations and must deal with the issues of blocked environmentally-friendly toilets, French delegates with pumpkin heads and minority-unfriendly jellybeans. The Australian prime minister’s press secretary Robin (Chris Buchanan) has his own issues: a PM who won’t stop shaking people’s hands and a belief that the men in suits might actually be capable of having an impact and making passionate speeches.

While they battle with dodgy translations, power-failures and hot-headed bosses the trio debate if it is possible for the man-in-the-street to have an impact on the world stage. With the help of some Peter-Cundell inspired topiary, some genuine Moet champagne and a bit of insider-knowledge of outdoor music festivals it just might be possible for Megan, Sam and Robin to not only get through the day unscathed but even change the world.

The cast is perfect working with a very funny script and showcasing great comic timing. If opening night was a cause for nerves it certainly didn’t show. This is a professional, quick-witted, interesting show that is sure to strike a chord with those still basking in the post-coital glow of the federal election. If you like your comedy with depth and your politics with laughs then you won’t be disappointed.
