Danny McGinlay – Coming Soon

“Danny McGinlay”:comic is a naturally charismatic and engaging performer who brings those traits in full to his new show Coming Soon…

This being the late show Danny had to compete with the intrusive sounds of the Axis of Awesome from a nearby by room and on this occasion dealt a genial but occasionally verbose crowd. Both of these thing he did with a generous and adept flair.

Kicking off with an excellent piece which breaks down the make up a film trailer, he proceeds, in the bulk of the show, to attempt to make the trailer of his own grandfather’s life. This gives Danny the opportunity to not only flex his excellent Irish accent but also to intersperse stories about his extended Irish family, which flash with geniality and humour. Combining audio visual material with this stand up, Danny then goes on to start to build up different versions of the life of his grandfather as he progressive learns more and more about the story of Hugh McGinlay.

Apart from the aforementioned problem with sound transfer, the other slightly off putting aspect of this show is the lo-fi quality of the AV presentation. And while lo-fi is the new black, in this case it really doesn’t suit the show. However it is a little unfair of me to mention it, as at the moment Danny is simply doing the best with what he has. I only mention thisbecause I’m struck at how much this show would improve if Danny had the opportunity to use a venue with adequate equipment and proper technical support.

Overall this show is founded on a great idea, reminiscent of the excellent BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? except with more of a comic bent. The material is also good but the show could do with a fair bit of tightening. If the tech aspects were smoothed out then I wonder how much wouild need to be done to improve this already solid show.
