Bec Hill in If You Can Read This My Cape Fell Off
If You Can Read This My Cape Fell Off sees Bec Hill debut in her first full length solo show in a piece which combines stand up, video, absurd theatrics, and what can best be described as ‘play’ (yes Wonder Woman, I’m talking about you here).

It’s hard to capture in words the exact nature of Bec Hill’s charming and infectious demeanour. Her onstage persona radiates an aspect of nervous energy which compliments her naïve charm and is speared with perverse logic and spontaneous bursts of humour. She not only has ‘cute’ in droves but that she capitalises on this inherent quality, making jokes at the expense of her own cuteness. But Bec doesn’t just project naive charm and cuteness, she in turn relishes those qualities where she finds them, bringing her joy of this to the audience.
Bec sticks well to her superhero theme, generating an hour of mostly new material on the subject. Often theme shows such as this, especially from younger performers, are merely vessels into which they shoe horn their regulation stand up material from the previous year. Not so with Bec, she engineers a true concept show with one of the rare pieces of older material, her Lazy Eye Man animation/puppetry/stand up sequence, gratifyingly finding what could be described as its spiritual home. The video sequences interspersed within the show are also excellent, especially the introduction video which will give you a glimpse of a whole new side to comedian “Richard McKenzie”:comic.
Please don’t get the idea that this show is cute in a vapid sense. There’s real cheese in this toasted cheese sandwich, resulting in a show which is top heavy with great material and an exploration of joy and silliness which is a real treat for those prepared to go on the ride. And, at the end of the show, almost as a testament to the intergirty with which Bec approaches her topic, the audience is also invited to sample some seriously tasty cheese toasties.
