Back for 2011, 7pm every Sunday on SYN 90.7FM (Melbourne)

“Month of Sundays” has a simple premise. It follows a group of four friends who meet for breakfast in a café over four successive Sundays. Played out over four acts, it looks at the changing relationships, particularly sexual relationships, shared by its protagonists.

From the get go this show lacks energy. Much of this is due to the lack of theatrical intent, with the creators opting instead for an air of naturalism. It’s an attempt at naturalism, however, which is let down by the inadequacies in both the writing and the performances.

At an hour and fifteen minutes this show is overlong. What should have been witty dialogue was in reality, more like inane repetition which made the piece seems slower again. The performers were somewhat to blame for this sluggish pace also. The delivery was largely stilted and unnatural, and the whole show was littered with cues you could drive a truck through.

The main difficulty I had with this show was rooted in the script though. What seemed to be intended as an examination of the complexities of inter personal relationships appeared more like clumsy and superficial melodrama. Whilst this appeared to be attempting to be like “Sex in the City” (a reference to which was even made during the show) it unfortunately it came off a little more like “Big Brother”, with the handful of good lines getting lost in the tedium.

This is a well intentioned show, which attempts to find an interesting place amongst this group dynamic, however, at this stage, it’s really not hitting its mark.
