It’s such a genuinly lovely feeling to see a show which just makes me want to purr. Justin reminds me of one of my favourite songlines of all time. It’s from Jimmy Hendrix’s “Little Wing”.

butterflies and zebras and fairytales, that’s all she ever thinks about

This encapsulates Justin’s demeanour so well. As he floats off into an almost imperceptible reverie of his own ramblings he becomes like a child building a fort out of two chairs and a blanket.

His strange brain world encapsulates a naïve charm, capable of embracing the ridiculous as thought worthy concept. Roughly speaking this show covers the topicof homelessness, although this hardly seems to matter. In some ways the moments when he was perceptively ‘doing material’ were the least successful. He stammers, ums and ahs, deconstructs his own work as he goes and it’s all delicious.

This is not a show for everyone. There would be some people who would walk out of a Justin D Lodge show shaking their heads and asking “where were the gags?”. However, he is so very funny if you’re prepared to take the journey with him. If you want more from your comedy than just a steady stream of gags, if you love comedians who happily exhibit their own peculiar nuances, if you can envisage a world where comedy can be like waking up in the morning and calling for the cat, only to realise that’s she’s asleep on your feet, then this show is definitely for you.
