I went to see The Changeling on the strength of the blurb in the program which promised: Heaving bosoms, quivering codpieces and the filthiest mime in Edinburgh.

This appeared to promise a comedy but the show turned out to be a Shakespearian style tragedy in which a young woman who is to marry falls in love with another man. She persuades an admirer whom she hates to kill her intended, hoping that they will kill one another or one will be inprisoned for the murder of the other. But the plan backfires and she then becomes embroiled in blackmail, revenge and murder.
There is also another tragedy interwoven into the story in which her mother, frustrated as her father is embroiled in his work, tries to arrange a liaison with a possibly deranged young gentleman.
The play is performed in an olde English language and proved a very powerful performance by all the cast. It did seem the audience that were there for the show had read the same as I, and perhaps a lot of the strength of the show was lost on them. If you are into tragedies and Shakespeare, however, this is definitely a play to add to your must-see list.
