Mirrors. The greatest social advance or the biggest curse upon the human psyche? Smothered in Skin tries to peer beneath the layers we cover ourselves with by using layers of makeup and clothing to mystify and a series of verbal labels to expose out inner feelings.
The group (six women and three men) start in their undergarments (leotards) and gradually hide themselves underneath the props society deems acceptable while questioning whether it does anything other than exposing the fact that the disguise is all that matters. The ending of the show when all layers are taken down (back to the start, nothing rude here) shows that the only thing that is real is what is left after all the deception is finished.
This show made a good attempt to convey these feelings and the cast were all willing to really cake on the cloaking paint. A good show if you want to understand why you hate the person who keeps looking out of that mirror at you.
