So after King John was overthrown and the evil Sherrif of Nottingham was thrown into jail, King Richard decided to put Robin into a witness protection programme so he wouldn’t get constantly mobbed by adoring fans or challenged by every two-bit hoodlum in ye Olde England. Marian had dumped Robin and brought out her own line of perfume and the Merry Men were forming a boy band.
Or so we are told by our merry minstrel and her mandolin in the prologue to our show. We open to find Robin is now working in a shoe shop in Edinburgh. Amazingly, on his first day, a customer arrives called Bridget who is travelling the land with the newly released Sherrif of Nottingham (these lax prison sentences in medieval times!). Bridget sees through Robin’s cunning disguise and tell him she is a secret agent sent to protect him.
From this point on, we get songs, merry japes, a very well executed swordfight in a very confined space, drinking of dubious wine and taking of even more dubious hangover pills, more revelations from Bridget and a quick escape through the back passage. The show only runs for 45 minutes from midday, so if you’re one of the dozen or so Edinburgh residents unlucky enough to be in paid employment at this time, take your lunchbreak off and have a good laugh. Even if you’ve just woken up, you’ll have a fun old time with these merry and musical comedians.
