“Danton’s Death” is set in Paris in the years after the French Revolution and the main protagonists, Robespierre and Danton, are now in a head to head battle for absolute power on France.

Danton does not want the Terror to continue, where every French citizen of noble birth or who may be harbouring kindly thoughts towards the nobles, is beheaded after a show trial. Robespierre, on the other hand, looks set to become dictator due to his unswerving belief in the power of Madame Guillotine.

This play looks at the struggles as each of the two leaders tries to sway the baying hounds in the public square of the rightness of his beliefs. There are a number of extremely passionate speeches given by Danton, and a few cold calculating responses by Robespierre but the ending is as inevitable as the title tells us.

The cast are excellent is their depiction of the passion and fear that abounded throughout France at this time and I recommend this play to everyone who loves historical dramas.
