Crave is a play by Sarah Kane and involves four young and very talented performers. The format is just the cast on stage with chairs, all firing off short sentences which when heard individually count just as overheard pieces of gossip, but when taken as a complete piece form a narrative about communication in the modern age.
The four all state their lines is sharp bursts and there is a compelling ryhthm to the dialogue as each line becomes akin to a four part harmony. There are only two points in the play were a character speaks more than a dozen words and these are very poetic raptures on the nature of loving and being loved.
Although this play didn’t appeal to me, I could see what was happening and how strong the characters were. I can also see how this play is much more appealing to a younger audience, as it’s is aimed at people who can only speak in short busts (like texting), and for whom long sustained soliliquies are anathema. So see it if you’re under 30 or want so see some excellent flowing writing being brought to life.
