Back for 2011, 7pm every Sunday on SYN 90.7FM (Melbourne)

Writing a show where the performers try to prove themselves intellectually and morally superior to the audience is nothing new. Getting things wrong when doing so can be a bit embarrassing though.

This show is hidden away on the 7th floor of the Jury’s Inn hotel. Don’t look for any big signs outside however, as there is an A4 message outside the lift and pretty much nothing else. Once you have arrived at the show, you will have a five minute recorded intro which has some amusing pieces of verbiage and a variation on the dick joke. The performers then come onto the stage and the evening starts to go downhill. I got the impression they had written this while under the influence of certain substances and never checked that what was written made any sense.

There are a lot of mentions of how the audience is stupid and won’t understand a joke plus numrous references to how they are going to split up and go solo (which only really works if the audience likes the act in the first place to have that feeling of impending loss). Then there is the cardinal sin of the two performers not looking at the audience unless they are berating us for not appreciating them. The final humiliation was when they pointed at a girl in the audience and yelled out ‘Get up here on stage!’ and grilled her as to which one of the two she would prefer to sleep with! So there are no actual jokes, no engagement with the audience (possibly made worse is the fact I was with sensei Adam Hills 1/2 an hour earlier), the ‘dark’ material was just crude and the finale was pretty telling. The high points were the recorded stuff (maybe they are scared on the audience?) and getting out of there.
