Geraldine Hickey – Trucker’s Daughter
Geraldine Hickey has successfully told me the second successful “bogan joke” I’ve heard, only days after Andrew McClelland told me my very first.

After her very successful show “One Week in Paradise” last year, Geraldine has followed up with another corker which combines her dry humour and unique storytelling style, “Trucker’s Daughter”.
The idea underpinning this show is of Geraldine trying to become her father’s ‘favourite’ and she even includes a ‘leader board’ which keeps track of each sibling as they triumph in a move upwards or fall into demise as they vie for the wooden spoon.
What makes Geraldine’s work unique is her storytelling capability which is not gag driven as such but offers up many moments of hilarity along the way. In this way she tends to make comedy look a bit easy as she almost appears to be not trying, simply having a one way chat which just happens to be one of the most sardonically funny ‘chats’ that you’ll have the pleasure to witness. This is also where the hour long format really seems to suit Geraldine in that she eases into and through her stories littering them with moments of joy and developing them fully.
There is also a lot of mutual recognition in this show. Like Geraldine I come from a big family. My sister, who came to the show with me, and I found a lot of familiar elements in Geraldine’s description of her own family.
This is a fabulous show from one of Melbourne’s most undervalued comedians. See her now while you can still catch her in such intimate surroundings as the Portland Hotel.
“Trucker’s Daughter” runs from Tuesday to Sunday until the 28th April. For details check out the MICF website
