While our sporting heroes are still struggling to even remember the words to our nation’s anthem, the crew of Lorin Clark’s theatre production, “For we are Young and Free” are taking a look at a deeper meaning to the lyrics, because, well… they already know what the word ‘girt’ means.

‘Advance Australia Fair’ was written over a century ago – in a time before monopoly was even a board game and Guantanamo Bay just sounded like a nice Summer holiday spot. So this show is arguing that Australia is no longer young, and begs the question through the eyes of rebellious Genevieve, whether we are in fact, free.

The bulk of the show features various moral and ethical battles between a restless and inquisitive daughter, Genevieve, and her settled and laid back father, Brian, about the state of Australia today. Instead of using extreme versions of the stereotypical Aussie bogan and left wing hippy, these were both real characters that I could relate to. Genevieve’s passionate outbursts of protest were complimented by Brian’s calm, happy-go-lucky responses, which left the audience not feeling like they had just been preached to.

A further overall balance of the show was created with the inclusion of the very far-fetched character of a book-reading, theory-devising, intelligent Paris Hilton. Paris’ unrelated yet enlightening interludes provided a quick respite between scenes. Also the character of the author of the anthem, who spends most of his time apologising for the lyrics and pointing out the hypocrisy in his own work, helps join the scenes together to clearly illustrate the message of the show.

This is a stylishly put together show with intriguing and easily likeable characters. This is a show for those who are able to enjoy comedy and possibly think about important issues simultaneously, as well as those who like the luxury of being able to enjoy comedy and sip on their glass of wine simultaneously. Hmm, three things at once – might seem a bit tricky, but if you can manage it, you will surely have a great night out seeing, “For we are Young and Free.”

For We Are Young and Free runs Tuesday through Saturday until April 21st. See the comedy festival website for further details and bookings.
