Back for 2011, 7pm every Sunday on SYN 90.7FM (Melbourne)

Dressed in an outfit made of “stimulated cow”, Dolly Putin, queen of irony and lover of meat because it’s full of iron, let down other right-wing shock jocks last night by not convincing a famous vegan to consume a Big Mac with fries.

If only Peter Singer was as yielding as John Howard is with that “great broadcaster” Alan Jones.

Supported more than adequately by Totally Gourdgeous, a group of musical ferals including folkie legend Penelope Swales, Dolly told the audience in her wonderfully satirical style why being a carnivore is kosher.

“Of course, I eat bloody meat”; she pointed out to Singer, and then reminded him that the title of her show is “Dolly Goes Down on the Farm”.

Singer, a utilitarian philosopher, was a surprisingly good interview subject for the bombshell with the tasty thighs, and when he got more serious and discussed farming practices solo he did it in an accessible and interesting fashion.

The production was interspersed with a variety of images such as footage which showed pigs living in cramped conditions, and the amusing accompaniment to the song; “Cows with Guns”.

Those who are going to see “Keating” during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) might be interested to know that Singer was one of the people who protested at the former Prime Minister’s piggery due to the conditions there.

Dolly wasn’t as confident or full of sharp lines as she was when she performed with Bob Brown, and she found it difficult to get huge laughs from an audience made up largely of activists who may or may not be known for their (pardon the pun) crackling sense of humour.

However, she has such wit and charm beneath her blonde wig and litany of silly opinions she couldn’t help but entertain.

“Dolly Goes Down on the Farm” is playing for the last time at the Festival tonight. For booking details, go to the MICF website
