Comedian Sandwich Delicious is an ensemble show bringing together three young comedians from Melbourne and Adelaide. Running in a basic comedy night style with Mat Kenneally as MC to Rob Hunter and Bec Hill, the no fluff format lets each of them flex their considerable standup skills.

Mat Kenneally opened the show with a quick dig at the remoteness of their location before launching into a political set covering terrorism, christianity racism and homophobia. Mat has a weird mix of nice and angry in his delivery that takes some of the heaviness out of some pretty weighty topics, making what could be a quite caustic set into some great laughs. His material on reconciling a belief in intelligent design with treating homosexuality as a sin is brilliant.

Bec Hill, sporting a freshly shaven head, brought out some fairly off the cuff material about flyering for the festival (including a great practical joke) before getting into the main part of her show. Accompanied by easel drawings, Bec presented some flawed superheroes and bizarre ads. It’s hard not to get caught up in Bec’s enthusiasm when she’s on stage – she delivers her material with a cheesy grin that’s incredibly infectious.

Rob Hunter closed up the show with a deadpan onslaught of one liners. As much as I love to see comedians as storytellers, it’s refreshing to get a good dose of jokes every once in a while, and Rob pumps them out at a rapid pace. His novel solution for world hunger using mathematics still has me laughing.

These are three comedians that are definitely worth keeping an eye on as they develop shows for future festivals.

Comedian Sandwich Delicious runs Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday until April 28th. See the comedy festival website for bookings and further details.
