Tasmanian Ben Payne, or “Trusty” Ben as he’s known on the farm, brings his ute to Trades Hall for his first kids comedy show. Although, being a teacher and father, I’d say he has plenty of experience in the field of children’s entertainment, and it shows.

The show is like a tribute to Ben’s ute, and good old “Rusty” seems to take on a personality of its own as Ben tells the tales of the many trials and triumphs they’ve shared together. Ben even recited a memorable ode to his wooden-trayed friend.

Another character in the show, and definitely a favourite amongst the kids, was “Dusty” the sheep dog, played by Ben with the aid of a collar, nose and floppy ears. Dusty started the show off with a game off fetch with the audience and assisted by sound effects and a desk fan, went for a convincing ride on the back of the ute.

The entire show is performed in, on and around his yellow ute, and along with the inventive use of props and features on “Rusty” the ute, the kids are in for a visual treat. Ben includes subtle adult humour for the parents so this show does appeal to all ages.

Ben acknowledged every child in the audience and involved them in some way, so all were enthusiastic about playing their small role in the show, whether it be making animal noises or helping to put out an imaginary fire. Looking around at the children’s faces it was evident that everyone was having fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show and considering some children’s short attention span, the show moved quickly from one gag to the next so there is plenty on offer – great entertainment for kids and kids at heart.

Ben Payne in His Yellow Ute is an afternoon show on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until April 29th. See the comedy festival website for bookings and further details.
