The boys from Tripod have taken the wrapper off a brand new concept show, and like a child with a brand new toy they are still trying to figure out what all the buttons and special features do. Based on the “history” of musical comedy or “momedy” as they call it.
Scod, Yon and Gatesy take a risk putting the guitars down for a significant part of the show. Instead they explore straight stand up, prop comedy, costumes and the world of multi media presentations. They even introduce new instruments to the show with keyboards and a cameo performance from Yon’s trumpet.
Overall it is exciting to see them try new things and generally they work and are typically both geeky and cool at the same time the build up to the songs were often bigger (and longer) than the songs themselves, with some of the music lacking the normal punch. The tunes, diversity of musical genre and harmonies were as strong as always. Audiences will walk away whistling the tune of the sea shanty.
Tripod have completed their run at the Adelaide Fringe.
