Comedian Scott Pollard is known around town for his MacGyver-esque ability to build amazing props out of almost anything, and there is surely no greater outlet for his work than the Moomba institution that is The Birdman Rally.
For the uninitiated, The Birdman Rally consists of a bunch of people constructing elaborate (and not so elaborate) costumes and trying to jump as far as they can over the Yarra river. From carefully constructed gliders to lovingly cut and pasted cardboard wings, the range of both budgets and sanity levels is extreme.
Scott is no stranger to the joys of the Birdman rally – 2004 saw Scott approach the pontoon as a Transformer robot and transform from robot to jet mode before plunging in the murky waters of the Yarra.
In preparation for his 2006 entry into the rally, Scott is performing a one night only solo comedy show to regale his audience with tales of Birdman past. Catch his show – Icarus Rising – True Tales from the Moomba Birdman Rally – 7pm this Friday, March 2nd upstairs at Bar Open (317 Brunswick St, Fitzroy). All tickets are $10 and all proceeds will be going to the Starlight Foundation.
You can also catch Scott as he takes part in the Birdman Rally on Sunday March 11th on the Yarra near Federation Square and Birrarung Marr.
