The 2007 Hobart Comedy Festival was recently launched. Running from January 9 to 20, the festival features a line up of many local comedians and a hand picked selection from the other states.”Tassie Stands Up” is a nightly showcase of Tasmanian acts. Justin Hamilton, Adam Hills, Fiona O’Loughlin and Tom Gleeson have been invited to perform shows. The Festival winds up with the huge The Theatre Royal BIG FINALE which features names such as Judith Lucy, Peter Helliar, Damian Callinan and The Umbilical Brothers. Tickets are on sale now. The deadline for registration in the 2007 Melbourne International Comedy Festival is fast approaching. Registration closes 5.00pm, Thursday 14th December 2006. The 2007 Melbourne Comedy Festival will run from the 4th to the 29th April. For details check out the MICF website
Room News
January 2007 sees the launch of a brand new comedy room in Melbourne. “The Oyster Club” is already starting to generate some chatter within the Melbourne comedy community. Run by Asher Treleaven the opening night will feature comedians including Andrew McClelland, Lawrence Leung, Bec Hill, Sam Simmons, The Bedroom Philosopher, Geraldine Quinn, Trent Baumann and more. The room will kick of on Sunday the 14th of January at the Spanish Club in Fitzroy, 7pm, tix $6.50.
Award News
With voting closing on the 16th December, Australia’s Charlie Pickering is up against Phil Nichol and Janey Godley in the Best International Guest category of the New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards for 2006. Charlie won the award in 2005.
Squirrel News
This is the last official issue of The Groggy Squirrel for 2006. However over the Christmas break we will still be continually updating listings as well as uploading new stories and reviews, so keep checking back to see what’s happening in squirrel land. We will be re-launching the website, bright and fresh any shiny, like a brand new piece of string but better, in February 2007.
