The Bedroom Philosopher – On the Edge of my Bed

Lucky for us, Justin Heazlewood (aka The Bedroom Philosopher) did in fact manage to find his way from the edge of his bed to the Lithuanian Club in North Melbourne last night to treat us to a night of songs and laughs. The Bedroom Philosopher is a stylists’ dream, but taking away the knitted vest that resembles the 1970’s wallpaper in my laundry would be taking away part of his charm that keeps drawing the steady crowds to his shows.

You may recognise him as one half of the musical comedy duo, The Renegades of Folk, who had great success at this year’s comedy festival. This time around Justin is without comedy partner Josh Earl but is still providing the same musical talent and poking fun at ‘emo’ we’ve come to know and love.

Never originally being a fan of musical comedy, the likes of the Bedroom Philosopher and the way he can eloquently fit into one verse, the number of words that would normally appear in three, have restored my faith in the genre. It’s difficult to describe his style, as his songs range from the melancholy to the ridiculous. Through his jokes and lyrics you get an insight into the mind of a … genius (?) with clever, if not at times groan-worthy, plays on words.

Not one to forget about those suffering withdrawal symptoms from the lack of football in Melbourne recently, Justin also supplies a piece of commentary of his childhood attempt to be the next big thing in AFL – resulting in one of my favourite parts of the show.

The Bedroom Philosopher may confuse you, surprise you, maybe even shock you, but I can guarantee he will entertain you, and whatever you do, do not leave early!
