In the cozy ‘bunker’ of the Butterfly Club in Port Melbourne, Sammy J keeps his team of audience members safe from the impending cyclone that rages around the venue. But if they can’t be saved, at least they will be entertained.
After the success of ‘Sammy J’s 55 Minute National Tour’ at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival where he took out the Best Newcomer Award, Sammy J is back with a brand new show, Cyclone. Combining jokes, songs, videos and a somewhat disturbing journal entry, he keeps ‘team’ morale high while death looms.
Cyclone does involve an element of audience participation, but only the fun, non-intrusive kind that everybody soon wants to be a part of. The mood is created well, with the aid of lighting and special effects. It’s safe to say there is something for everyone in this show, with topics ranging from the Y2K bug to the questionable behaviour of Year 9 students. With so much packed into this highly entertaining hour, I’ve still left some surprises for punters wanting to see the show.
Being set in the center of a massive cyclone capable of mass destruction, Sammy used the technical difficulties that were encountered to his advantage. If anything, they provided a unique show full of hilarious moments – moments that often were hard to place as scripted or improvised. As his first song states, you could die tonight, but most likely only from laughter. Just give Sammy J a piano and a prima!
