Obviously the Fringe is a time for new artists to be given the stage to see what they can do. This can mean that you can sometimes see shows that are slightly less polished than you may be used to. Unfortunately, Luke Whitby’s Hellfire Sale is one of these shows.
The premise is interesting, Satan’s last day at work, and opens up several funny one liners. However, these were then stretched over each section with the humour being diluted with each repetition. Each of the characters was distinct, idiosyncratic and believable, though unfortunately the uncertainty of first night jitters really detracted from this performance. Luke would often nervously repeat certain phrases for each character, almost as though he was uncertain of the material. This could, of course, improve during the run of the show.
There were some highlights such as the wonderful dance scene at the end of the show. However, on the whole, I think it would be better to wait to see a more polished show by Luke Whitby.
