Back for 2011, 7pm every Sunday on SYN 90.7FM (Melbourne)

Although I was somewhat disappointed with the noticeable lack of a fireman’s pole, this new comedy venue in the heart of Preston impressed me in every other aspect. The name is rather self-explanatory, as the venue itself is in fact, an old fire station with paintings adorning the walls above the patrons enjoying the cuisine and fine wine.

Also a venue that hosts art exhibitions (also for sale) and jazz, the addition of comedy comes about as director, John Lacorcia says, “Preston is now changing in terms of demographics with an influx of artists, performers, musicians, etc. and generally people who enjoy live entertainment. I am a strong proponent of live entertainment.”

From the red light illuminating the stage to the sweet aromas emanating from the kitchen, The Old Fire Station has an ambience that is warm and ultimately conducive for an entertaining yet relaxing night out. It is an intimate venue with positioning of the stage allowing clear vision of the comedians from all tables (and vice versa) and good, fun interaction with audience members. The only downside being that latecomers, or audience members in one corner of the room, need to walk in front of the stage to get to the bar, toilet or outside area.

The good news for non-smokers is that as this is simultaneously a restaurant, smoking must be done so out the back at all times. The good news for smokers is that comfortable couches and chairs are provided in the outdoor garden area.

With comedy nights running every month for about the last six months, past headline acts have included Chris Bennett, Dave O’Neil, Brad Oaks and George Kapinaris. Along with attracting big names in the industry, the venue also provides a platform for emerging talent. Normally consisting of the usual two brackets, on the night I attended we were treated to an extra bracket of comedy. MC Richard Marks pushed the sound system to its limits enthusiastically introducing the three young up and coming comedians, including Alison Bice, before bringing on headline act, Hung Le, who entertained the crowd with his ukulele-supported parodies.

Attending the comedy on the last Friday of every month (starting at 8:00pm) at The Old Fire Station Café Gallery will set you back $15, but the best way to make a night out of it is to take advantage of the three course meal and comedy deal for $50. Group bookings are welcome. Next month you can catch Pommy Johnson along with, I’m sure, some of Melbourne’s hottest new talent.
