Venue – Gilded Balloon debating hall
While standing in the queue for this show, I got to chatting to Rhod Gilbert (who was behind me) and he promised to go to the Local next time he is in Aus (hope you don’t mind, Janet) and he also said he’d heard of The Groggy Squirrel, so cheers all round!
I had read a couple of reviews of this show, both of which were rather negative in their first paragraph and then ended up saying how much the enjoyed the show, and giving it three stars. As far as I could tell, their criticism was based on the fact that Tim is doing a similar show to last year, in that he sings, plays the piano and chats to the audience. What they were expecting of him (eating the piano, perhaps?), I’m not sure.
The show runs for about 75 minutes and has only one song from last year (Canvas Bags due to economic imperatives). Tim does a little more talking to the audience this year (long chat with one girl from Perth), but he has cut out the death defying stunts.
The songs include the opening Air Band number, a song about how other people are worse off than us, another twisted love song and a couple of other entertaining pieces (I lost my pen, sorry). The room was the same one as he performed in last year and his shows are selling out every night. My only criticism is that it was extremely hot in the room and the only fan was used on Tim during one of his songs!
So to summarise, if you saw and enjoyed Tim’s show last year, then you’ll have an equally good time at this one. If you are wondering what all the hype is about, then you must grab a ticket soon or you’ll be left wondering until next time. If you don’t like cherubic piano playing impish entertainers, then maybe you should stick to Big Brother.
