This was the final night of the run, so you’ve probably missed your chance to see this interpretation of the classic Shakespeare play “The Tempest”. The small stage and cast meant that the most was made of the space and there were some interesting prop utilisations made. The play itself, for those unfamiliar with Shakespeare, concerns Prospero, the ex-Duke of Milan and his daughter, who have been cast adrift on a small island, where Prospero has found a means of causing raging storms and other magical manifestations to prevent anyone discovering his whereabouts. This all changes when a storm catches Prospero’s brother (the new Duke), the king of Naples, his son and Prospero’s old advisor. Prospero arranges matters so that the King of Naples’ son meets and falls in love with Prospero’s daughter while the other shipwrecked mariners are distracted by magical spells. The cast did a very good job in the small and extremely hot room and, although the play ran 15 minutes overtime, it was still completed in under 2 hours. There were a few scenes where dialogue was eschewed and the spirits (Prospero’s familiars) conveyed some of the scenes in dance. All up it was an enjoyable performance and an energetic portrayal of the Shakespeare play.
