Venue: Sweet at the ECA (upstairs out the back)
This is not a comedy show. This is three poets performing. Do not come along expecting laughs, although the central performer does perform a few amusing stunts.
The first girl, Rhian Edwards is a Welsh beauty dressed all in brown with sensible high heel shoes. She is also the type of girl who would probably thump me for referring to her as that. she did some soul searching poetry about her life and relationships, and her style was reminiscent of Dylan Thomas, in both the vocal cadences and wordplay. Impressive work but her stare will terrify you (there were only seven people in the audience so we all got ‘the look’. The final poem was the best and most disturbing.
The second poet was Nathan Penlington who did some poetical tricks and a bit of magic. Very much lighter tone and managed to display some of the trick of the trade during his essay/act.
Finally we had Suzanne Andrade who was all in black and performed in front of a couple of projectors displaying animations to illustrate her poems. This is very surreal stuff and quite often very disturbing. One of the poems reminded me of the Prostitutes Song by Edwina Preston (full of passion and anger).
So, all up, we have three experts in the poetic arts who give us an hour of their soul. If you enjoy poetry them you must see this show. Just don’t be fooled by the program entry!
