Danny Bhoy

Playing to a home crowd does have a huge advantage for comedians. I have noticed this trend after seeing a few Australian comedians such as Wil Anderson and Claire Hooper and then Scottish comedian Danny Bhoy.

Being able to ‘take the piss’ out of recent current affairs and parking restrictions can go along way for a local comedian. Danny Bhoy even went as far as to make jokes about the bagpipes and his traditional music. But saying all that, as an Aussie in the audience, I was still in fits of laughter.

Bhoy gallivants around the stage like a six year old that has drank too much red cordial. His quick witted humour was interrupted by erratic dancing combined to make an outstanding display of energetic comedy.

Danny Bhoy was able to bring all of his random ramblings about music, politics and religion all back to a single loose theme of tradition. This rough outline for the show helps keeps it on a track and prevents it becoming a bunch of one-liners.

After being disappointed with Danny Bhoy’s previous performances in Australia I was a bit sceptical about seeing this show. But within minutes I was swept away by his Scottish charm and his impeccable wit. Bhoy’s ability to feed off the audience’s reactions truly proves that is a magnificent comedian.
