My best memory of childhood is… Family holidays at a timeshare by Lake Taupo, N.Z. The whole area is volcanic so if you dig your hands into the sand on the shore you can feel the geothermal heat radiating from the lake crater as the whole area gets ready to erupt. The heady fear induced by the potential for imminent death-by-lava is quite intoxicating.
The world would be better without… Casinos. Haven’t seen your Grandad recently? He’s at Crown attached to a life support machine that gives him a free plate of fish and chips and a nights cheap parking for every pension cheque he spends.
The thing I regret the most is… I went to a music festival in ‘99 where Tim and Neil Finn played a once in a lifetime tell-your-kids set with Shihad as their backing band. While they were playing ‘four seasons in one day’ the rain stopped and the sun shined through the grey clouds onto the joyful tableau below. Regrettably, I missed this moment in music history as I was in the dance music tent listening to late 90s house music. The years since have shown the true staying power of M-people remixes but I still question my decision.
I get annoyed by… Glossy celebrity magazines- processed cheese in readable form.
You haven’t lived until… You’ve toppled a third world government. Not so difficult these days. 1970s Uganda was taken over by a psychotic child-like cook so I’m hopeful that a comic with an arts degree could oppress somewhere a bit nicer, like Tahiti
