An Open Letter To All Involved In The 20th Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Hello Everyone!

So the Juggernaut that is the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is over for another year. We here at The Groggy Squirrel would like to extend our thanks to the people involved that made it such a fantastic three and a half weeks.

Kudos to all the comedians who flyered their little hearts out in front of the Town Hall. Come rain, hail or…well just rain or hail, these guys were out there, some of them working for hours every night before their shows even began.

A bloody big thank you to all the Techies that worked on the shows. Without you guys there would be no stage to stand on, no dazzling lights and no microphones to amplify the jokes. These guys came in hours earlier than the comedians to set up and were there for hours afterwards packing up. Good on ya!

The bar staff at the many different venues also deserve a massive round of a applause for keeping us intoxicated. Cheers!

Thanks to the other journalists who also worked hard to cover the festival, particularly those from “The Pun” who did their very best to cover every single show in the festival. This kind of coverage is vitally important, not just for comedians, but for the industry in general.

To the publicists and promoters who worked their arses off to make the road easier for the comedians they represent. We media folk appreciate all your help. Extra special thanks to those comedians who represented themselves, often working several jobs at once.

Props to those who put on shows at venues outside of the CBD. We hope that you got decent sized crowds to see your work.

Huge applause for the Comedy @ Trades crew for a brilliant venue and all the wonderful acts that occupied their rooms. It was great to see the place back as a second festival hub after several year’s absence. All we need now is a Shuttle Bus to bring in the Town Hall crowd!

Thanks to all the people who took a big risk and put together truly unique shows. These were a welcome relief from the many straight stand up shows that populate the festival.

To the audiences who decided against seeing the big name acts in favour of taking a punt on a less established performer/cast. We hope that you received many pleasant surprises.

Thanks to MICF and the City of Melbourne for producing and hosting one of the best comedy festivals in the world – delivering loads of opportunities for local and visiting funny people, an awesome atmosphere and much pride in a wonderful artful city.

Most of all, a massive thank you to all of the performers who put their hearts, souls, reputations and often their own money on the line to entertain us.

See you all next year. That is, if you don’t see us first at the regular rooms.
