Most people in Melbourne have at least a rudimentary understanding and knowledge of Australian Rules Football. I am not most people. In fact, I hate football…a lot. This fact however didn’t stop from having a lot of fun at Cal Wilson’s show “Up there Cal Wilson”, which is all about footy.
This show documents Cal’s journey of being a Kiwi choosing a football team. She takes an unconventional approach to this task, finding comic potential in aspects like uniforms and (memorably) team songs.
Cal tops and tails this show with what I could only describe as interpretive dance about footy. These moments are gorgeous and highlights of the show (look out also for Cal’s faux burlesque routine midway through the show). Cal’s self proclaimed lack of knowledge of football adds to the charm of the show. Her sweet disposition bubbles through and contrasts against the very blokey world of footy. Cal employs a lot of different devices, recordings of theme songs and interviews and a variety of onstage props, adding to these aids with a spray of comical observation.
There was the odd football reference which was lost on me but judging by the audience that really was just me. If you’re into footy Cal’s show would probably appeal to you that sliver more, but her energy and humour make this a show a lot of fun for anyone.
