OK, I admit I had never heard of Sam before last week and only saw him for the first time on Monday night (at the Local). I must admit I was impressed with the way he was able to destroy a few of the tired old comedy routines in just his five minute intro. He is a personable and slightly disturbing performer who has chosen, in this festival show, to do an hour on the wishes of children and why they won’t work. How it was possible to get an hour of material was of concern to me before the show, but he managed to get enough out to keep the small crowd entertained from start to finish.
The room was down the lane behind Duckboard house which looks scary and forbidding, but don’t let that deter you from going to see this show and learning why granting wishes can be a very bad thing if put into the hands of those least qualified to use them. Just a warning that he does make a few jokes about the middle east situation and John Howard which may offend some sensitive souls. But then there were a few people in the audience that seemed to miss the connection with one of them. Also you might want to see how long he keeps the flea joke in the show, which even he admits hasn’t yet made anyone laugh.
