Waiting around in the Swiss Club bar, the audience (or at least those early enough to not be relegated to the outside line) were greeted by Rod Quantock wearing Groucho Marx glasses and nose attempting to sell them raffle tickets to raise funds for Al Qaeda. It’s nice to see the dedication of a comedian willing to amuse his audience on a one-on-one basis.
Rod has been a fixture of Melbourne comedy since before I was born, and his experience as a performer really shows. He’s got a great degree of confidence on stage, and suprisingly still manages to inject all of his material with passion and fervour. Sometimes his enthusiasm pushes his material into the realm of a ranting lecture, but for the most part he keeps the laughs coming.
Some of his humour is a bit obvious – some of the absurdities of our government cry out for ridicule, and at times he doesn’t do much beyond holding them up for their due. Sometimes you wonder how hard he’s trying, but the material comes so thick and fast that it’s not long before he’ll drop a great line that will have you laughing hard again.
The audience was filled with people of all ages—families and supporters young and all. Rod’s television exposure as the face of Captain Snooze is still paying dividends, bringing in a wide variety of punters and the wide appeal of the humour seemed to entertain young and old. As long as your political views align with Rod’s there’s quite a few laughs to be had here.
